Medical personnel were treating casualties both in the Nashville’s wardroom and in the enlisted mess. They tended a wounded population that eventually reached 190, including General Dunckel. A Navy captain and two senior Army colonels were among an eventual total of 133 dead, some already being laid out aft in Nashville’s aviation hangar.

The awful news for Tommy Thompson was that his Marine Detachment, save for its leaders Chambers, Pedersen, himself, and a few others—had been wiped out. Nearly half Thompson’s Marines—those assigned to boat deck guns—had been killed outright. All the rest (save Limbaugh and his two buddies, who were ambulatory) were seriously wounded.

Each loss was personal and wrenching to Thompson, none more devastating than the wounded boy the ship’s medical officer brought Thompson to see. The doctor was encouraged. The Marine would likely lose his arm but would just as likely survive. Apparently overhearing this prognosis, the Marine seemed to lose his spirit right before Thompson’s eyes. The young Marine died soon after.

Destroyer Stanly (DD-478), the ship assigned to help in just these circumstances, pulled alongside to fight fires while other ships retrieved dozens of Nashville survivors from the water. Once damage was assessed, Nashville turned and headed back to Leyte Gulf (and eventually stateside repair) with Stanly as escort. Meanwhile, Struble, the wounded Dunckel, their staffs, and four reporters were transferred to destroyer Dashiell (DD-659), which unexpectedly found itself hosting a dozen VIPs.
